As I drove to the office today, I saw a landscaping company hard at work mowing the lawn near our building. Upon driving by, I noticed the red zero turn mower—the product of a customer. I smirked and thought to myself , “I bet one of our Associates helped make that lawn mower”. Whenever I see this particular customer’s product, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride. I am proud of the important work that our Associates do each day, and I am proud of the relationships our company has built with so many of our customers.
That lawnmower ‘drive by’ got me thinking of all of the ways our company and our Associates have put their stamp on the community—and on the world. When I’m shopping online with the nation’s leading home improvement retailer—our Associates wrote the product descriptions. When my blood pressure is taken at the doctor’s office—our Associates helped assemble the components. When a device saved my cousin serving in Iraq from a roadside bomb—our Associates assembled these units. That is pride.
Do you take pride in your work?
I can’t help but think of a quote by President Woodrow Wilson: “No task, rightly done is truly private. It is part of the world’s work”.
Regardless of the type of work you do—teacher, homemaker, widget assembler, writer—it seems that those who have a greater sense of pride in the work they do deliver a greater end product. When asked about their work, it is this group that can talk about their work with a true sense of satisfaction (and pride) for what they do. So, no matter they kind of the work you do— know that it is important to some one, some how.
