How to Be Good at a Job You Don't Love

How do you get yourself out of bed in the morning when you dread going to work? You already know tomorrow won’t be any better. So how are you supposed to carry on till you find something new?

In order to get a better job, you need to excel at your current one. Although this may feel like a Catch 22, now more than ever you need to build a solid reputation, get stellar references and make a maximum effort to attract new career opportunities.

To upgrade your life, start by upgrading your thoughts and mindset. Create an attitude that will bring you closer to a better situation. Reposition the way you think about your current job so you can give it your best and when that golden opportunity comes along, be ready to make it your own.

Empower Yourself

Instead of shutting down or complaining, change your mindset to one of accountability and empowerment.

  • Be appreciative. You can still appreciate the fact that you have a job, even if it’s not ideal. Don’t lose sight of the “pros” associated with it: income, benefits, perhaps free training and development, and networking platforms.
  • Respect yourself. You won’t be in this position forever. But while you’re here, you owe it to yourself to give it your best. This is key to maintain your self-respect. Bring a high level of dedication to your work. Then, at the end of the day, you can feel proud of your efforts. By approaching your work with dignity and respect, you’ll make a powerful impression on others and new opportunities will be more likely to come your way.

Consider these additional tips to getting through the day-to-day:

  • Get up early. What?! This may seem like the exact opposite of what you feel like doing, but it helps. Start gradually by getting up 15 minutes early, then build up to perhaps an hour. Fill this time with activities you enjoy, such as reading, exercising or fixing yourself a nice breakfast. Make getting out of bed something to look forward to. It will take the sting out of your workday ahead.
  • Make plans. Focus on friends and people you truly enjoying spending time with as you plan after-work activities. Give yourself something to look forward to.
  • Make a daily list. Include everything from sending emails and completing tasks to getting your coffee. If you’re having a particularly bad day, add an item like “Meet Jane for lunch at the deli.” If it has to be done that day, put it on your list, no matter how insignificant it may seem. When you complete an item, check it off. This is a surprisingly simple and effective way to power through a challenging work environment – and it has the added benefit of making you more productive in the process.
